Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia, Q. During this period, (1895) the coiners at the New Orleans Mint had a job to do: to coin as many silver dollars as possible in the least amount of time. To say that their workmanship was shoddy would be an understatement; from a numismatic viewpoint, it was terrible. Knowing that most of these silver dollars were not wanted in the channels of commerce and would simply go into bulk storage after they were minted, the workers had little incentive to create an attractive product.

To churn out a stream of Morgan dollars with as little attention to the presses as possible, the coiners spaced the dies slightly too far apart, thus minimizing die wear and breakage. The result was as stated: terrible-looking coins. Visually, a drop-dead gorgeous coin that has it all.

From an eye appeal standpoint, the most stunning 1895 O Morgan Dollar ever offered. A razor sharp strike, frosted devices coupled with deep mirror surfaces. PCGS designated the coin AU details with Smoothed Surfaces. In other words, the frosted devices and deep mirror cameo appearance was restored by a truly great numismatic artist.

The details on this piece are so razor sharp that this coin, in our opinion is undergraded. Often times, a grading service will net-grade a coin that has been restored, even if the restoration resulted in a stunning masterpiece. Grading services often utilize a standard that rewards originality and punishes even the most beautiful and successful restoration.

Compare this piece's details with certified coins grading BU. It is visually more magnificent than any of the MS-66 or MS-67 coins offered.

The restoration process on this piece is incredible and while there are many certified AU-58 specimens on the market, this coin is far superior. Again, you be the judge! Free Copy of my book with this order. This item is in the category "Coins & Paper Money\Coins: US\Dollars\Morgan (1878-1921)".
